Rosemary Beetle

(Chrysolina americana)

Record courtesy of E. Jones - Image courtesy of L. Manning

This wonderfully coloured beetle was sent in to the People and Wildlife department of the Kent Wildlife Trust by E. Jones. She is a member of Wildlife Watch, which is a club for younger members of the Trust. The beetle was identified by Pauline Heathcote, who brought it to KMBRC's attention. This species was first recorded in Britain in Surrey in 1994, and is now well established in several parts of South East England. As its name suggests, it feeds on the leaves of Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), but has also been recorded feeding on Lavender (Lavandula spp.) and Thyme (Thymus spp.).
