Kidney-Spot Ladybird

(Chilocerus renipustulatus)

Record courtesy of G. Davie - Image courtesy of L. Manning

This ladybird was actually found inside the KMBRC office by Gail Davie. It was initially believed to be a variation of the Two-Spot Ladybird (Adalia bipunctata), but on closer examination, we could see that the spots were not circular, the wing-cases were flared on the lower edge, and the head and thorax were entirely black.

They feed on scale insects and aphids on the bark of trees, and consequently generally hibernate under the bark of sallow, poplar and birch trees. Therefore we were rather surprised to find it in the office!
