Becoming a Pond Warden

Volunteer Pond Wardens in Kent

Have you got an interest in ponds, conservation, wildlife and/or the environment? Then how about becoming a Pond Warden. The Pond Warden Scheme, run in conjunction with Southern Water and BTCV, is now recruiting for next year. No previous experience is needed, as through a series of

FREE

training courses run by BTCV, you will gain the knowledge and experience to help others preserve, create and manage ponds.

Ponds are one of the most important habitats for wildlife in the British landscape but, despite this, thousands are lost each year. Did you know that 75% of ponds have disappeared over the last 100 years due to development, pollution and neglect? Ponds are a valuable habitat for a wide variety of freshwater plants and animals, but their potential is often overlooked.

Ponds can have historical value, and most are dated from the medieval period to the 19th century. Their purposes include storing water, watering livestock, amenity value, and have an educational use.

As a Pond Warden, you can get involved with projects such as surveying and researching your local ponds, finding prime sites to create new ones, and working as a local point-of-contact within your community. Pond Wardens receive ongoing support from BTCV, including technical advice, educational materials, and tool loan.
