Things to look out for in July

July is a "cross roads" month. Some activities such as birds fledging are coming to an end while the glory of our wild flowers is just beginning to develop. Flowers are at their best during July and with them comes the profusion of insect life all scrambling to maximise the glut of food and egg laying spots.

The birds are quieter this month as many of them moult their breeding feathers but butterflies and dragonflies now occupy the air.

Good places to visit in July

  • Church Wood near Canterbury (TR123593): rich plant life and butterflies.
  • Queen Down Warren near Sittingbourne (TQ827629): chalk downland flowers, butterflies and invertebrates.
  • Wye Downs near Wye (TR077455): chalk downland flowers and insects.
  • Yockletts Bank near Canterbury (TR125477): coppiced woodland, orchids, wild flowers, nightingales.
