Introduction

In addition to species records and habitat data, KMBRC has other data stored on a Geographic Information System (GIS). For those that do not know, GIS is a computer mapping system that allows different polygon layers to be placed on top of one another on screen, usually with a map as a background. Not only can this be used to see exactly where different sites are in relation to a recognised Ordnance Survey map, but also layers can be correlated with other layers. For example, if you have habitat and nature reserve layers, you can use GIS to find out how much of the county's chalk grassland is protected within a nature reserve.

Besides the 2003 habitat survey GIS data, KMBRC also holds data on different designated areas in Kent, a brief summary of which is outlined below. Besides those mentioned below, KMBRC also holds data on different administrative boundaries, different land owners (e.g. National Trust, Woodland Trust) and different uses (e.g. Country Parks).
