Kent and Medway Biological Records Centre

Data - Site Data

Introduction

In addition to species records and habitat data, KMBRC also holds data on different designated areas in Kent, a brief summary of which is outlined below. Besides those mentioned below, KMBRC also holds data on different administrative boundaries, different land owners (e.g. National Trust, Woodland Trust) and different uses (e.g. Country Parks). A bried summary of the different types of designation can be found here, or click on the links to the right for more information.

How KMBRC manage Site Data

KMBRC stores geographical information about Kent's designated sites and habitats on a Geographic Information System (GIS). GIS is a computer mapping system that allows different layers of spatial information to be placed on top of one another on screen, usually with a map as a background. Not only can this be used to see exactly where different sites are in relation to a recognised Ordnance Survey map, but also layers can be correlated with other layers. For example, if you have habitat and nature reserve layers, you can use GIS to find out how much of the county's chalk grassland is protected within a nature reserve.

Obtaining site designation information

For commercial users, our standard searches include a map showing clearly labelled designated sites around your area of interest, but if you would just like to explore Kent's sites then there are two main interactive maps to explore:
  • The national Magic portal
  • Kent's own K-LIS portal

If you are interested in spatial analysis of site information, then please specify your particular requirements in the Additional Items - Other part of our information request form.
